Mentoring & Teaching

In my 9th and 10th grade years, I was apart of Allen High School's Peer Assistance & Leadership program. It was one of the best decisions I ever made in my high school years. I was lucky enough to mentor Kindergarten class from Anderson Elementary, and children (K-6th) in Marion Elementary weekly to conduct activities such as dances, reading books, playing games and taught soft skills such as discipline, punctuality, honesty, cleanliness and group orientation. Through this program, I was able to learn how to effectively communicate with kids. I developed skills such as active listening, empathy, and finding ways to personally connect with each child, building strong, trusting relationships along the way. I was able to connect two of my favorite things, spending time with children, and growing through learning and mentorship.

Ever since I was younger, I had attended Tamil school, where I learned to read, write, and speak of my heritage and cultural roots, Tamil. Once I finished all the grades, I wanted to continue to be able to connect to other people through this language and became an assistant teacher for grades K-8. Specifically, I was assigned to help a 5th grade class of about 15 students, but also helped other teachers in other grades as well. My tasks included grading weekly homework/classwork and helping to plan cultural events. Through this, I made forever lasting relationships, learned to connect with children effectively, and manage my responsibilities.
